"Other Costs Paid by Student" include an estimated $1,000.00 for snorkeling and diving gear and diving certification at Dartmouth. Gear may cost between $500 to $1,000 and the fee for diving certification at Dartmouth is approximately $250.
The $5,650.00 charge includes your room and board costs for your living accommodations during the program and all meals (except for those mentioned below.). Accommodations vary from small, modest hotels to dormitories to relatively primitive field camps, depending on the location.
Additional Food and Spending Money
You should plan for extra meal costs while in San Jose (about 3-4 days total over the Costa Rica part of the program) when traveling to and from field sites in Costa Rica (e.g., 3-4 lunches on the road, snacks, cold drinks, etc.), and in between your air travel segments. You may also need a small amount for items like regular notebooks for lecture notes, pencils, pens, souvenirs, lost/forgotten items, etc. For most students, ~$250 for food and $250 max for other items has been plenty. Dartmouth will supply some essential personal items, i.e., waterproof field notebooks, underwater writing slate and light, and your personal copy of the coursebook when it is published.
The group airfare will first be billed to Dartmouth and then Dartmouth will bill your account. The program will arrange and pay for all ground transportation within Costa Rica.
Personal gear—such as clothing, boots, snorkeling gear (mask, fins, snorkel, wet suit, weight belt, no weights). If you will be SCUBA diving, you may need other equipment (see the SCUBA/Snorkel section for details). Purchase the Divers Alert Network (DAN) membership/insurance online. Price varies depending on whether you will be doing SCUBA ($35 membership plus $75 for Preferred Plan) or snorkeling only ($35) http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/membership/.
All students must purchase the basic DAN membership even if they only plan to snorkel.
